Adventures in Science - Virtual Worlds Institute: What Happened to the Neanderthals? Monday-Friday, July 7-18, 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Grades 6, 7, and 8. The scene: Homo sapiens and Neanderthals are living side by side in Ice Age Europe. Were they friends or enemies? Did they speak to each other, mate with each other, or kill each other? Why did Neanderthals become extinct and leave humans as the only hominid species on Earth? Use fossil and genetic evidence to investigate these questions and bring competing scenarios to life using 3-D digital software, a photo-realistic virtual Ice-Age Europe, and fossil specimens from the Museum’s collections. You will meet Museum scientists who will expose you to cutting-edge careers in the field of physical anthropology, and you will take behind-the-scenes tours of our research departments. In addition, the Virtual Worlds Institute will provide you with valuable information about high school internships and research opportunities at the American Museum of Natural History. Member price: $1050; Non-member price: $1100. American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th Street, New York, NY 10024; 212-769-5100 www.amnh.org
